Damilola.

Damilola’s photographic work often includes the American flag — not necessarily as a symbol of patriotism, but as a backdrop against which the subject’s relationship to America can be examined. His work centers the Black American experience: how Black Americans have shaped the country we know today, carried it forward through adversity, and continuously redefined what America looks like, sounds like, and means.

Beginning his photographic journey through portraiture, Damilola Ayoola has since moved toward a more documentary-style approach to film photography, blending observation with personal narrative. This shift debuted through SCRAPPLE SANDWICH, a work that functions as both his literal and figurative self-portrait.

His practice lives at the intersection of identity, image, community, memory, and power — documenting not only people, but the emotional and cultural landscapes that surround them.
